A high precision pulsed QCL spectrometer for measurements of stable isotopes of carbon dioxide
نویسندگان
چکیده
We describe a prototype instrument using a Peltier cooled quantum cascade laser for precise measurement of stable carbon (C/C) isotopologue ratios in atmospheric CO2. Using novel optics and signal processing techniques in a compact instrument, we are able to detect the difference between sample and reference with a precision of 0.1‰ (2σ std error of mean of 11 samples) in 10 minutes of analysis time. The standard deviation of 0.18‰ for individual 30s measurements shows that this prototype instrument already approaches the best reported literature values using continuous wave lead alloy tunable diode lasers. The application of pulsed near room-temperature quantum cascade lasers to this demanding problem opens the possibility of field worthy rapid response isotopic instrumentation and attests to the maturity of these lasers as spectroscopic sources.

What are the instrumentation requirements for measuring the isotopic composition of net ecosystem exchange of CO2 using eddy covariance methods?
Better quantification of isotope ratios of atmosphere-ecosystem exchange of CO2 could substantially improve our ability to probe underlying physiological and ecological mechanisms controlling ecosystem carbon exchange, but the ability to make long-term continuous measurements of isotope ratios of exchange fluxes has been limited by measurement difficulties. In particular, direct eddy covariance...

A precision laser spectrometer for the detection of CO(2) isotopes is reported. The spectrometer measures the fundamental absorption signatures of (13)C and (12)C isotopes in CO(2) at 4.32 microm using a tunable mid-IR laser source based on difference-frequency generation. The spectrometer attains a precision of up to 0.02 per thousand for 150 s of averaging. An overall accuracy of 0.05 per tho...
متن کاملSimple, Real-Time Measurement of Stable Isotope Ratios in H2O and CO2
Picarro WS-CRDS-based analyzers are the first instruments to combine simple, turnkey operation with sensitivity and precision better than or equal to the IRMS (isotope ratio mass spectrometer) systems traditionally used in stable isotope labs. This opens the door for widespread exploitation of stable isotope studies in fields such as carbon/water cycle research, GHG (greenhouse gas) monitoring,...
متن کاملDevelopment of a compact quantum cascade laser spectrometer for field measurements of CO2 isotopes
We report the development of a field-deployable, pulsed quantum cascade laser spectrometer. The instrument is designed to measure the 13C/12C isotopic ratio in the CO2 released from volcanic vents. Specific CO2 and CO2 absorption lines were selected around 4.3 μm, where the P-branch of CO2 overlaps the R-branch of CO2 of the 0001–0000 vibrational transition. This particular selection makes the ...
متن کاملApplications of cavity ring-down spectroscopy to high precision isotope ratio measurement of 13C/12C in carbon dioxide.
Recent measurements of carbon isotopes in carbon dioxide using near-infrared, diode-laser-based cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) are presented. The CRDS system achieved good precision, often better than 0.2 per thousand, for 4% CO2 concentrations, and also achieved 0.15-0.25 per thousand precision in a 78 min measurement time with cryotrap-based pre-concentration of ambient CO2 concentratio...
